Professor Paul Dolan
Professor Paul Dolan is an internationally renowned expert on happiness, behaviour and public policy, conducting original research into the measurement of happiness, its causes and consequences. He is currently a Professor of Behavioural Science in the Department of Social Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science, and Director of the new Executive MSc in Behavioural Science.
Paul has appeared across a range of broadcast programmes offering his expertise including This Morning (ITV) and Horizon: How You Really Make Decisions (BBC Two) and has written for a large cross-section of the major national newspapers and glossy magazines. He is currently working on a major project for BBC1 due for release in early 2016.
His book Happiness by Design was published to critical acclaim on the 28th August 2014. The book brings Paul’s latest research in behavioural science together with current findings in happiness studies to create a new concept of happiness – it’s not just how you think, it’s how you act.
He has previously worked with Nobel Laureate Professor Daniel Kahneman at Princeton University, where their 2008 paper in the Economic Journal has been the most cited paper in the journal since that year. Paul also currently advises policy-makers in the UK and US on how to measure wellbeing and is a member of the National Wellbeing Advisory Forum for the Office of National Statistics in the UK.
He was an author of the “Mindspace” report for the UK Cabinet Office. “Mindspace” is a mnemonic for the nine most robust effects on behaviour that operate largely, but not exclusively, through our automatic system (the part of our brain that responds unconsciously to contextual influences). His work on Mindspace is being used across the public and private sectors, and he is increasingly asked for consultancy advice on how to change behaviour in organisations and populations.
Paul has lectured and spoken at a variety of institutions and businesses about his research on happiness and the importance of wellbeing in the workplace.
