Hackney born Sophie Wright is one of the youngest and most successful female chefs in Britain today. During her training at the highly acclaimed Westminster Culinary Arts College Sophie gained huge acclaim and was very quickly pushed into the public eye for her passion to compete and succeed within the industry. At just 20 years old, on graduation from Westminster and after a summer of culinary travels she was appointed as Head Chef at Notting Hill’s celebrity hangout restaurant Beach Blanket Babylon, turning it into a venue not only synonymous as a place to be seen in, but one known for exceptional food.
Sophie has made various television appearances on Market Kitchen, River Cottage: 3 Good things, Great Food and Daily Cooks. She is also a regular panelist on BBC Radio 4’s Kitchen Cabinet alongside Jay Rayner.
2012 saw the start of a new venture and Sophie’s appointment as Executive Consultant Chef at Grace Belgravia, an exclusive women’s only members club and wellness center. It was here that Sophie had the exciting opportunity to work with some of the UK’s leading physicians and nutritionists, including fertility expert nutritionist Henrietta Norton. Here, Sophie worked on developing menus for their patients and members, targeting specific aliments.
With a passion for healthy, healing and nutritious food, Sophie began to explore the concept of food as medicine and is now working on her fourth book, Blooming Delicious with the contribution of Henrietta. Due for release in January 2016, the book outlines easy, nutrient-packed and great-tasting recipes for women to enjoy during pregnancy, as well as offering food-related remedies to women suffering with common pregnancy ailments. After having her son Bertie in 2014, Sophie realised the impact nutrition and diet could have on a pregnancy and from there, experimented with foods and recipes to relieve symptoms such as morning sickness, dizziness and anemia.
Sophie set up her own business, Sophie Wright Catering in 2007, based in Battersea. Sophie and her team of 7 cater for events of all sizes and for a range of clients from bespoke intimate dinner parties for celebrity clients to events at Buckingham Palace. Other clients include The White Company, Manchester United, Somo and Swarovski.
Sophie is part of the British Culinary Academy competition team, competing on an international level. Since 2003 Sophie has racked up 50 national and international medals including a Culinary Olympic Silver in 2011. It is no surprise that The Times named Sophie as one of the ‘most influential under 25 year olds’ and that Red Magazine named her in their ‘Top 20 under 30 to watch’ feature.
Sophie has had 3 books published by the age of 26 with a fourth on the way. Her debut book Easy Peasy was awarded the Gourmand Easy cookbook of the Year 2008. Her second book, Home At 7, Dinner At 8 was a collection of recipes designed for real people – hungry, busy professionals with not-much time. The Evening Standard affectionally dubbed her ‘The Commuter’s Chef’ which led to a 30-week column in the newspaper. Her third book On a Shoestring was published at the end of 2012. Sophie also writes a regular food column in Great British Food Magazine and Cook Vegetarian Magazine.
