In May 2017 Amber presented the two-part documentary series for BBC Radio 4, From Rags to Riches, where she followed the journey of vintage fashion and second hand clothing over the last 100 years.
She is regularly called upon to share her expertise on the fashion industry and its history, contributing to programmes on a wide range of subjects for BBC One & Two, Radio 4, Sky Arts, 6Music & Channel 4. She has appeared numerous times on Radio 4’s Today Programme, You & Yours and Woman’s Hour, and her opinions are regularly sought in the press, from The Guardian to the BBC.
She has appeared as an expert on a variety of programmes including The Great British Sewing Bee (BBC Two), The Secrets of Selfridges (PBS), Inside Versailles (BBC Two) and Mozart’s London Odyssey (BBC Four).
Amber is an Associate Lecturer at London College of Fashion and is the author of three published titles: Amber Jane Butchart’s Fashion Miscellany (February 2014), Nautical Chic: the history of high fashion on the high seas (April 2015), and The Fashion of Film (September 2016). She is currently working on her fourth title.
She began her career as the Head Buyer and Trend Analyst for international vintage clothing company Beyond Retro. During this time she was interviewed for The Observer as one of the fashion world’s best buyers and photographed for Vogue as a girl with great British style.
Amber is regularly asked to speak at conferences and public lectures and has spoken at a range of institutions including the British Museum, Royal Academy, V&A, Tate Britain, British Library, Institute for Contemporary Arts, Wellcome Collection and British Film Institute, on areas as diverse as cross-dressing in Victorian music hall, gothic style, and the Regency fashion of Jane Austen. She has appeared as a panel speaker for The Selfridges Beauty Project and has given the keynote speech at ADL Group’s Fashion for Action conference in November 2014.
She has also worked with top brands such as GHD, TK Maxx and YSL Beauté, lending her historical expertise to their public campaigns.
